Integrators (Amplifiers)
An integrator is an essential component when working with Rogowski coils. It performs signal amplification, linearization across frequencies, phase shift correction, and maintains the overall accuracy and reliability of current measurements when using Rogowski coils in various electrical applications. Before going ahead with Integrators, first check which Meatrol meters have built-in integrator compatibility with Rogowski coils.
What do Integrators do in relation to Rogowski coils?
If, for example, a Rogowski coil output is a weak voltage mV signal, then an integrator would be used for its ability to amplify and convert the weak voltage mV signal to a standard signal when used in conjunction with a multi-meter and scope. Compatible Meatrol multi-meters for these occasions are:
(1) ME237R which accepts Rogowski coils input directly and
(2) ME237C which accepts a standard CT input. So there is no need to use an integrator when using these two types of multi-meters.
Integrator plays a crucial role by performing several important functions:
Amplification and Signal Conversion:
In the event of a Rogowski coil's output being a weak voltage signal in the millivolt (mV) range, an Integrator can amplify and convert the weak voltage signal into a standard signal which can be easily measured and displayed on a multi-meter or oscilloscope. This conversion ensures that the signal is strong enough to be accurately read by the measuring instruments.
Linear Response Across Frequencies:
In the vent of a Rogowski coil's output signal being directly proportional to the frequency of the measured current, an integrator would achieve a linear response across a wide range of frequencies. This means that the Rogowski coil can be used to measure currents in different electrical networks with varying frequencies while maintaining the same output level. The integrator ensures that the signal remains consistent and accurate regardless of the frequency of the measured current.
Phase Shift Correction:
An integrator also serves to correct the phase shift in the output signal from the Rogowski coil. It shifts the signal by 90 degrees, which is important for accurately measuring current waveforms. This phase shift correction ensures that the output signal aligns properly with the current waveform being measured.
Active Electronic Circuit:
The integrator is typically an active electronic circuit with characteristics such as negligible offset and good linearity. These features ensure that the integrator does not introduce additional errors or distortions into the measured signal. It helps maintain the accuracy and reliability of the current measurements.
